Education Overview

For an individual who desires to maintain an atmosphere that is completely dedicated to their practice of Christian Science, being in an environment where the Christian Science nurses are receptive to the same inspiration has a beneficial and calming effect, which aids in healing. In a Christian Science nursing facility, everyone is working from the basis of trust in the healing power of Christian Science.

Why would someone want to become a Christian Science nurse?

It is important that we support each other in our greatest needs. Mary Baker Eddy recognized that her students would face challenges and impelled every member of the Church to be healers. Christian Science nursing is just a means to fulfill that directive.

What qualities are needed to be a Christian Science nurse?

Jesus instructed his students to be wise and watchful as well as compassionate. Christian Science nurses maintain that same loving compassion, especially when attending to others.

“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 395), states that “The nurse should be cheerful, orderly, punctual, patient, full of faith,—receptive to Truth and Love” Article VIII, Section 31, of the Manual amplifies these requirements of character by the following statement: “A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.”

What does a Christian Science nurse bring to the atmosphere?

When we expect goodness and health, we are rewarded. Even on our busiest day, we are striving to express God. We are a supportive community, always helping each other. Selflessness, tenderness, empathy, charity, camaraderie, and energetic enthusiasm are all the qualities that are expressed daily at Broadview.

What are some of the practical skills that are learned in the Christian Science nurses training program at Broadview?

In the Christian Science nursing classes, personal care, bathing, helping a patient get dressed, and other practical skills are taught. Aiding someone with mobility, including utilizing mobility aids and equipment in various circumstances and settings is also covered. Cleansing and covering, assisting individuals in a camp setting, caring for individuals in their home and leadership skills are also taught. All skills are taught on a foundation of Christian Science.

How do these practical skills become proficient?

Dedicated Christian Science nurse mentors are always available to ensure the right practice of skills. Students are lovingly shepherded and guided to the right course of action and can progress at their own pace.

How do you become a Journal-listed Christian Science nurse?

After successful completion of Christian Science Nurses training levels 1-4, a student may apply to have their name listed in the Journal. The requirements for application are on the Mother Church website. You may ask Fornis Siameja, the manager of Christian Science nursing education for more information regarding this.
