The members of First Church of Christ, Scientist have kindly loaned us two items of great interest to share with our staff, guests, and visitors!
The first is a pew bench from the original church edifice of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA. It is dated 1894 and is on display in the hallway across from our Activities Room.
The pew bench was used when additional seating was needed in the original Mother Church (before the extension was built). On the back of the pew bench, there is a copy of a document dated 1970. During that period, The Mother Church sold many items from storage. In the files of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Newport Beach there is correspondence from a Mrs. Howland, who donated the pew bench to them.
The second item, a Subscription Edition of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, is displayed in our front lobby. It is a beautiful book printed in 1939. For more information on the history and printing of the Subscription Edition, read this post from the Mary Baker Eddy Library.
